THE COMMUNITY OF SANT'EGIDIO

The Community of Sant'Egidio was founded in 1968 in Rome. It is a Christian community made up of women and men of all ages, ethnicities, social conditions whose aim is to help women and men who, due to multiple events, spend their lives in the absence of essential goods and rights. The Community of Sant'Egidio is present in 80 countries, on all 5 continents. It promotes multiple activities, which are briefly illustrated below:
 

• Through the "LONG LIVE THE ELDERLY" program, moral and material comfort is brought to the elderly who lack means. People who live in solitude the problems that, with advancing years, evolve into almost unsolvable criticalities. Access to health services, limited economic possibilities, emotional deficiencies, family abandonment.
   
• "THE SCHOOL OF PEACE" is the moment of encounter with that childhood deprived of the joy that naturally and daily should illuminate the face of every child. Learning through play, a good dose of sweets, a good dose of patience, a large dose of affection.
   
• "THE MEETING WITH FRIENDS ON THE STREET" through the distribution of meals and basic necessities, breaks through the wall that isolates, ghettoizes, human beings who are denied the train of possibilities. An embrace that is proposed again in the "HOUSES OF FRIENDSHIP", with showers, laundry, legal and medical assistance, with inclusive events such as Christmas lunches, on the occasion of significant anniversaries for the Community. Some clubs and churches are equipped for the COLD EMERGENCY", to save the Amici di Strada from the winter frost.
   
• "LA SCUOLA DI ITALIANO" is the hand extended to women, to men who hope. Who by leaving their countries, often at war, entrust their future to our land. They will know, they will learn our language, our culture. Their perseverance, faith in a life project, their winning smiles over suffering, give new perspectives to our lives, weighed down by anxieties and dissatisfaction.
   
• "HUMANITARIAN CORRIDORS": the Community goes where life is denied, in refugee camps. Timeless prisoners, condemned without guilt, without any expectation. Children who have become adults between insurmountable fences. The most critical cases are selected, with an airlift, transported "LEGALLY" to Italy. Welcomed by families close to the community and not, who for a long time take care of individuals or entire families.
   
• All the activities are the result of the commitment, of the transport of thousands of volunteers who live daily in the teaching of the Gospel.
